"We firmly believe anyone can play rugby with positions to fit everyone, and there’s no better time to learn a new sport than at university!"
With Women's Rugby seeing an increase in participation across the UK - especially at a competitive level with the number of University teams at its highest in recent years, the future is bright and exciting for Keele Women’s Rugby Club. Last year we saw an influx of over 30 freshers making us a squad size of 50 - one of the largest sports teams at Keele!
We pride ourselves on our friendly community. We firmly believe anyone can play rugby with positions to fit everyone, and there’s no better time to learn a new sport than at university! Our weekly socials and matches mean we are always active and meet up multiple times a week. Introducing a development team this year gives us the opportunity to play non-competitive games for those who are new to rugby, or just want to play in a friendly atmosphere; importantly this ensures everyone gets match time whether they are playing for the 1st XV or not.
When I joined Keele Women’s Rugby, I instantly felt welcomed and part of a family - we don’t just train together, we study and party together which has been a key highlight of my first year at Keele university. My aim for the development squad is that as many of us as possible get involved in development days and matches throughout both academic semesters. This will help confident and skilled players to step up into playing for the 1st XV knowing they already have match experience and are surrounded by supportive teammates. Most importantly we foster the image that we are one team and one community.
